Tea-Table Talks

The beginning of a new year is a time when many people commit to making changes in their lives.   I've always found this to be an interesting thing, because in my experience I have found that when people commit to something, they commit with the idea that what they are committing to won't change.  Yet, at this time of the year, we deliberately commit to making changes.   Maybe that's why so many of us are unsuccessful with our New Year's Resolutions.

Buddhists believe that suffering comes from our not wanting things to change when in fact, everything is changing all the time.  In the Buddhist perspective, by not accepting change we actually cause suffering.  This is why Buddhists practice meditation... to live in the moment and appreciate it for exactly what it is, because the next moment is different.

Sometimes we cause suffering because while we know things will change, they don't always do it in a way we expect.  Yet again, Buddhists teach us to not have expectations... just accept what is.   This doesn't mean that we can't do things to improve ourselves, or create positive change, it just means that often times our expectations are not met through our exertions.  The Rolling Stones summed it up probably the best way, "you can't always get what you want, but sometimes, you get what you need."  The expected outcome may not have been what you needed.  The actual outcome may be.

So, we need to take a look at our views of commitment.  If we do, in fact, look as commitment as adhering to something that won't change, then we are setting ourselves up for failure/suffering.  What if we approached ALL of our commitments, not just our New Year's Resolutions, knowing that what we are committed to will be changing?  We need to continue to honor our commitments, but allow it to flow with the inevitable fluctuations that will occur.  We need to allow ourselves to work hard to adjust to that flow and allow it to become what we need, even if it doesn't seem that way.  Notice I said work hard?  Without hard work, then we haven't fully honored those commitments; but the results are worthwhile, as we will grow, find ourselves and end up being stronger for it in the end.

I currently have many opportunities arising for directing some changes in my life.  Some of this does affect The Soulful Cricket.  The Holistic Moms of Southern Chester County will still be meeting here the third Wednesday of each month, Sue Bara is still taking appointments here and rooms are still available to rent for meetings, events and appointments.  The only real difference you'll see is that I will no longer be offering classes.  Third-party classes will still be available as the opportunities arise, so keep checking the schedule!  In the meantime, I am working to see that the commitments I have made will continue to flow with the changes that are occurring around me.

May you have a blessed 2014 and may you be able to initiate changes that allow you to continue growing as a good person, honor your commitments and serve others.  Embrace the changes that happen this year.

I am still looking for some kids and kid-like adults to try out a new children's meditation class!  The first five participants to sign-up will be able to take the class for free!  The class is about 1 hour long and parts of it will be held outside. Tea-Table Talks

When I woke-up this morning, I uttered my favorite morning phrase:  It's a good mushroom day today!  For those of you don't live locally, Kennett Square is the Mushroom Capitol of the World.  Many days we wake up to the smell of mushrooms.  Or, more specifically, the smell of what mushrooms are grown in.  After having lived here for over five years, I'm mostly immune to it.  When I do smell it, as I did this morning, it doesn't offend me anymore.  It's almost "homey". I do realize, however, that many other people don't quite feel that way.  So - if you visit The Soulful Cricket and you see lots of candles lit, it is probably because it was a good mushroom day.   It's one of the few "perks" in living in this part of the Brandywine Valley!

We enjoyed a busy summer!  The TKE reunion went well and, as always, made us laugh a lot.  Tim has some fabulous fraternity brothers.  We've been spending a lot of time on our Joyous Porch, too.  The weather wasn't as hot as last year, so spending time on the porch is always, well... a joy.   As my friend Teffie says, "It has healing powers."  In a way, I think it does.  It's good for the soul and that's what we're all about here!

The Holistics Mom Network: Southern Chester County Chapter (HMNSCCC) welcomes Dr. Peter Prociuk in October.  Dr. Prociuk was a very popular speaker the last time he came to the HMNSCCC!  He is a board certified practicing physician who looks at the body in a truly holistic sense.  By all accounts, he is a fabulous speaker and imparts some very useful information.  This is one of their meetings you will not want to miss!

The Clarion Brass has also been using the living room as their rehearsal space.  The living room has some wonderful acoustics for small groups like this quintet.  Music is one of my passions and I'm hoping more folks choose to use The Soulful Cricket as rehearsal or performance space.  It may be selfish on my part, but it gives me a chance to hear some fabulous live music!

November is a very busy month!  The next series of meditation classes are being offered and will be focusing on "Giving Thanks" and how meditation can help "calm" your holidays.  Registering early would be a good idea for these!

Also in November is my first what I hope to be annual Arts and Crafts Show.  The vendors have agreed to donate a percentage of their profits to one of two charities:  Alpha Rho Omega and their charitable works (which includes Relay for Life and others) and/or the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.  More details will be published both on the website and on our Facebook page soon, so keep your eyes peeled!  HOWEVER, if you're interested in being a vendor, please email me now and I'll tell you what's happening!

Other upcoming classes and events include more offerings by Sue Bara, Monica Shaffer Stover will be doing another Sculpting Your Inner Goddess retreat and we welcome cross-stitch pattern designer Beth Seal.  With so much happening, you'll need to check the website frequently!

It is my hope that you have a blessed holiday season.  Remember to keep it simple, keep it light and keep it honest.  :)

Blessings,

Tea-Table Talks

This spring was fairly quiet.  My husband and I have been spending some time working on the house, entertaining friends and family, welcoming our son home from college, getting everybody set on their summer schedules and spending time on my fabulous Joyous Porch.

I've been trying some new things here at The Soulful Cricket, including an Open Mic Poetry Night in June. Unfortunately, it had to be canceled. I plan on trying Poetry Night again in September when the weather is still warm enough to hold it outside and things have gone back to routine for the school-year-folks.  If you're a teacher, please encourage your students to write something and bring it to read!  I believe that giving the kids the opportunity to read their own creations instills in them a sense of confidence that can only benefit them as they continue forward.  Don't, however, think this is just for kids --- this event will be for all ages!  Watch the website for information!

The final deadline to register for the Sculpting Your Inner Goddess seminar is fast approaching.  All registrations must be in to Monica by July 7th so that she has enough time to order and buy materials.  Monica Stover is a fabulous presenter and has an intuition about herself and others that is rare in most people.  There is a limitation of only 15 registrants, so be sure to register!  She will not be able to take walk-ins, because of the materials needed.

As with any new business, new opportunities come along!  I've just had our baby grand piano tuned because I've been contacted by a local pianist with the idea of having a concert.  I also have a high school friend with whom I've recently reconnected who designs her own cross-stitch patterns.  She was just featured at our local cross-stitch store and we may be able to work out some classes here!

As explained in the special mentioned above, I've developed a new meditation class for children ages 7 - 12, but before I make it "live" I'd really like to try it out.  If you and/or your children are interested, just let me know.  I'm looking for about 5 people (mostly children with 1 or 2 adults) that can take the class and give me some feedback.  We'll schedule the hour long class on a mutually agreeable date.  I'm actually pretty excited about this class because it involves a neat activity!!  In fact - I can't wait to try it out!!

I'm also working on another meditation-style project.  I'm hoping to have it ready by the final quarter of this year - I'm still doing a lot of research.  It's a "hold my feet to the fire" project and they can get a bit dicey, you know, but learning together is a lot of fun!

On a lighter note, Tim and I are hosting a reunion for Tim's college fraternity, Tau Kappa Epsilon, in July.  He and his 1980s brothers have remained close for the last 30 years and getting as many together as possible is always a good time. I love to throw a good party!!

Enjoy your summer and I hope we see you soon!

Tea-Table Talks

The first quarter of 2013 went well! Sue Bara, myself and four students got through the Monday Morning Meditations classes in spite of forgotten holidays, sick kids and ice storms.  There was a lot of schedule-juggling, but in the fashion of mindfulness everybody went with the flow.  I learned a lot from Sue and it was a good experience for me personally.  I'm looking forward to taking what Sue taught me and my own experiences and applying them to the next series of meditation classes!

In my last newsletter I talked about the benefits of meditation.  It seems that I can't stress enough the huge health benefits that you get from a regular meditation habit.  Most of us know that meditation can benefit our spiritual practice, whatever our faith may be; but the mental and physical benefits are not well-known or thought of as being "hogwash".  So, I'm giving the link about it again!  Read about what the University of Massachusetts Medical School does with meditation and mindfulness in their own hospital and the research behind the benefits that led to this fabulous program.  There is study after study proving just how much good it does. I've found it to be very beneficial in managing my pain from Fibromyalgia and in offsetting my insomnia! Join me for a class and see just what the studies are talking about!

Two events are coming up that I'm really excited about (in addition to the meditation classes, of course)!  On April 20th, Kimberly Gough of Newport, PA will be bringing her Stella and Dot Trunk Show to The Soulful Cricket.  Personally, I love Kim's sense of style.  Not only is she a beautiful woman, but she's a well-put-together woman!  She'll be teaching us how to create our own style and become our own "well-put-together woman".  I'm looking forward to her suggestions for somebody like me! The event is open to the public, but Kim is asking that you RSVP so she's sure she has enough supplies for everybody!

Another event that I'm really excited about is the Sculpting Your Inner Goddess retreat!  Monica Stover is a fabulous presenter and has an intuition about herself and others that is rare in most people.  She has the ability to guide you through yourself (yup - I meant to say it that way) to help you find your inner goddess.  There is a limitation of only 15 registrants, so my suggestion is to register as soon as possible.  I have a feeling it will be filling up very quickly!

Tim and I are still working on the house and have come up with landscaping plans.  Getting the outside of the house dealt with will give us the ability to use our outdoor space, too!  I also can't wait to get the Joyous Porch open because that means Spring Is Here!  The Joyous Porch is our summer living room and my place of peace.  It even has it's own Facebook page!  If you're in the area, check the Facebook page for whether the Joyous Porch is open or not.  If it is, drop by!  That's what it's here for!  We would love to see you!

The Fireside Journal - January 2013

The Fireside Journal
News from the Soulful Cricket
January 2013
Edition #1

Welcome to the first edition of The Fireside Journal.  On a quarterly basis I will be sending out a newsletter highlighting events, happenings and specials at The Soulful Cricket.  I may also choose a topic on which to briefly ruminate in a segment entitled "Tea-Table-Talk".

You may sign-up to receive the newsletter (and interim announcements) by using the "Receive Announcements & Newsletters via Email or Feedburner" box on the right or by sending me your email address.

Announcements

We're Open! As of January 1st, 2013 The Soulful Cricket is taking day-use reservations for the downstairs spaces!  There are several rooms available, including the dining room, den, living room and great room.  To see more information about the rooms go to What We Do on our website.  For pricing, please call 610-444-2629 or email for a quote.

Fabulous Partnership!  The Soulful Cricket is so happy to have the opportunity to work with Sue Bara and her own business expansion into Kennett Square.  Sue is the owner of Nature and Spirit and DandeLion Grove.  She will be taking appointments for Reiki Sessions, Herbal Counseling, Stress Counseling and Holistic Health Counseling here to serve the Kennett Square area.  To make an appointment, please call Sue at 302-722-4476 or by email.  Keep an eye for other classes that Sue will be offering here, as well!

Classes and Events!  Details will be provided in the Schedule of Events listed below, but there are some cool things happening here at The Soulful Cricket.  Our first is a course of five classes on meditation that is being offered as part of our partnership with Sue Bara.  This is an exciting class for both Sue and me, as we'll be combining our knowledge of meditation to create a class to benefit anybody, regardless of faith or spiritual background.  Registration is by Friday, January 11th and spots are still available.

Our second happening is actually two happenings...Two book groups that will meet once a month each.  These are no long-term commitment books groups that you can choose to come just for the book-of-the-month on either the fourth Wednesday or last Sunday.   We will be randomly working our way through a list of "must-read" classics that I have compiled over the years.

Specials

Our first Monday Morning Meditations course is at NO CHARGE! To kick-off our new venture, our first class, Monday Morning Meditations, is being offered at no charge.  We will take donations, but we want to introduce you to the many benefits of meditation as well as to the space The Soulful Cricket has to offer.  Take advantage of probably the ONLY time you get a free five week class!
Tea-Table Talks
It's pretty exciting to take the next big step in doing what I've always dreamed of.  It's also very scary.  As with all things, this will have to morph, change and flow as I better recognize the needs of all of you and what exactly this house is able to handle.  It will be a learning process, to be sure.

The meditation class is a great way for me to kick this all off.  Meditation has so many benefits that many of us don't recognize.  I think that the impression of meditation is that it's some "hippy culture hanger-on".  This class may be the myth-buster you need!  Just the proven medical benefits from meditation alone make it a very real and healthy addition to your daily life.  Don't believe me?  Read about what the University of Massachusetts Medical School does with meditation and mindfulness in their own hospital and the research behind the benefits that led to this fabulous program.  There is study after study proving just how much good it does.  This is the place and time for you to try it and see how it can benefit you.  Heck - the course is free, so what do you have to lose other than an hour or so just for your self each week?

There are so many opportunities for The Soulful Cricket that I can't list them all!  I would love to do small art shows, musical programs, knitting groups, book groups, receptions, art classes, food and wine tastings... it's only the imagination that's limiting the many uses this home can have.  Let your own imagination run wild as to how I can help accommodate you and your group.  Call me and we'll talk about how to make it happen.

The year 2013 is promising to be a fabulous year... because we have the ability to make it so. I''m taking this opportunity to fulfill my dreams and I hope you'll join me!! Here's to starting off a new year!
